Temples of Kashmir: Shankaracharya Temple

19th August 2012

This Temple is hard to miss in Srinagar. Situated on a hill of 100ft high, it is one of the prominent places seen from Dal Lake.

Shankaracharya Temple seen from Dal lake

The climb to this hill starts near Nehru Park adjoining Dal Lake.  Be ready for a strict security check at CRPF check post at the base. Once though, the 5 km climb to Shankaracharya Temple begins. The roads are great and you reach base of the Temple in few minutes. And then you need to climb over 100 steps to reach the Temple.

The Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is named after Shankaracharya after his visit to this Temple. The Temple is said to be constructed in 200BC but few archeologists put an argument stating the time to be 9th century AD.

View of Srinagar from Shankaracharya Temple
Since cameras are not allowed inside the Temple, there is no opportunity to take snaps.  But you can get down at any of the views points while driving down and take some snaps!! For the view of Srinagar (especially Dal Lake) it is worth stopping at some view points.
